The founding fathers of Japanese streetwear

Japanese streetwear is a dynamic and influential movement that has captured the attention of fashion enthusiasts worldwide. Tomoaki Nagao aka Nigo

Probably the most prominent Japanese streetwear designer and the founder of brands like A Bathing Ape (BAPE) and Human Made. NIGO’s innovative designs and collaborations have had a profound impact on the streetwear scene, both in Japan and globally. Hiroshi Fujiwara

Also known as the "Godfather of Harajuku,". However, not notoriously known unless you are a streetwear enthusiast, to those that know; Hiroshi is a legendary streetwear designer, DJ, and producer. Hiroshi’s brand, Fragment Design, and collaborations with major brands like Nike, Louis Vuitton, and Converse have solidified Hiroshi’s status as a trendsetter in the streetwear world.

Jun Takahashi

Another designer that might not be a household name to those without a deep understanding. Jun is the founder and designer of UNDERCOVER, Jun is celebrated for his avant-garde and punk-inspired streetwear collections. Jun’s designs challenge traditional norms and push the boundaries of street fashion.

Yohji Yamamoto

While not exclusively a streetwear designer, Yohji’s avant-garde and deconstructed designs have heavily influenced the Japanese streetwear movement. Yohji’s label, Y-3 (a collaboration with adidas), brings high fashion and sportswear together in a unique and influential way. Probably the most widely known to all audiences, Yohji’s Y-3 label can be purchased almost anywhere.

Takashi Murakami

Although primarily known as a contemporary artist, Takashi’s colourful and pop-inspired artwork has been featured in numerous streetwear collaborations. Takashi’s collaborations with Louis Vuitton and other brands have contributed to the fusion of high fashion and street culture. Most generally known for the Murakami flower.

Tetsu Nishiyama aka Verdy

Widely known as Verdy, Tetsu is a Japanese street artist and designer. Tetsu’s brand, Wasted Youth, and collaborations with various streetwear labels have gained popularity for their bold graphics and youth-centric designs.

Pharrell Williams aka Pharrell

‘Skateboard P’ is non-arguably, the most famous and well known on this list. While not Japanese, Pharrell has played a significant role in promoting Japanese streetwear culture globally. Pharrell’s collaborations with BAPE and the Human Made brand have helped introduce Japanese streetwear to a broader international audience. Widely recognised as one of NIGO’s best friends, his connection to Japanese culture runs deep.

These influencers, along with numerous streetwear enthusiasts and creative minds in Japan, have collectively shaped the vibrant and ever-evolving Japanese streetwear scene. Their artistic vision, collaborations, and innovative designs have left a lasting impact on the world of fashion and continue to inspire new generations of streetwear enthusiasts both within Japan and beyond.
